Hikari Ryuza Ryu Do Kan has been a dream of Grandmaster Crimi's since the 1960's. In 1977, when the late Grandmaster of DanZan Ryu Jujutsu and co-founder of the American Judo and Jujutsu Federation, Professor Bud Estes volunteered to sponsor Dr. Crimi in opening his Dojo, he immediately relocated from Reno, Nv. to Grass Valley, Ca. to open his dojo. By volunteering to sponsor an individual, said sponsor is vouching for that person's character. Due to the fact that Professor Estes vouched for Dr. Crimi he was responsible for overseeing the Dojo's first year of operation.

For the first 6 months after Hikari Do Kan / Hikari No Ryu ® was established Grandmaster Crimi held his classes at the local high school. Thereafter, he procured a building located off of Rattlesnake Rd. in Grass Valley. For the next 11 years he ran various classes 7 days a week including, adult classes, children's classes starting at age 4, Defensive Tactics for law enforcement (Grandmaster Crimi is the D.T. instructor for Nevada County Law Enforcement and has been since 1977), Women's Self Defense (over 1000 women have attended these classes to date), classes for the disabled including the blind, stroke victims, people confined to wheel chairs, and the elderly.

Then in 1983, in the pursuit of fulfilling his dream, Grandmaster Crimi made his first attempt at building his Dojo. Yet despite his diligent efforts the timing was not right for the construction of the Hombu Dojo.

By 1988 Grandmaster Crimi had two other schools running in Northern California. This year also brought about a new direction in his Martial Arts. He closed the other 2 schools maintaining only the Hombu Dojo. Then for the next 10 years he taught 4 to 6 private students a day, seven days a week. In 1998 he once again opened up his classes to include group classes, while some of his private students transitioned themselves into these. Eventually group classes were taught 6 days a week, reserving Mondays for his continuing private students.

Those who know Grandmaster Crimi can attest to his insatiable drive, and unwillingness to give up on his hopes and dreams. And that's why 11 years later, after the first attempt at building his Dojo fell through, he sat up in bed in the early morning hours of January 17th, 1999 and said "It's Time!" and then proceeded to clear the first boulder from the building site that very day. From that day on it was Grandmaster Crimi and a handful of his closest students, that built Hikari Ryuza Ryu Do Kan ® from the ground up.

Seven days a week 16 hours a day Grandmaster Crimi and his students researched, shared their findings and worked by the sweat of their brows until its completion 8 months later. Building the Dojo was a tremendous experience for all. Everyone involved learned invaluable hands on skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. On August 13th, 1999 the first official class in the new Dojo was a 17-week Defensive Tactic, class for the Nevada County S.W.A.T. and S.E.D. teams.
